5 Tips to Help You Live in The Moment and Make Everyday Moments a Little More Special...

I think we can all agree that it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. I am horribly guilty of walking through life with my head down moving from one task to the other. Many days my life are a series of checkboxes just waiting to be ticked off; by the end of it, I've hardly felt like I've lived at all.

A few months ago, as I stared at my beautiful sleeping child (who took more than an hour to get to sleep), I realized I was missing out on the very best part of my life. Then and there I decided it was time to be a present player in my life. Not just for me, but my whole family.

It's not always easy and I'm not perfect, so when life gets really busy I try to give myself a little break and treat myself with kindness. After all, sometimes I need to walk around with my head down checking off boxes. But, not always.

Here are 5 easy tips that often help me to pull my head out of the clouds and bring me back to the present moment...

  1. TAKE MORE PHOTOS: no, not food photos or blog photos. I'm talking about everyday photos of life. Octavian is growing so fast I don't want to miss a second. Don't worry about the perfect pose or background; I guarantee your favorite photos will be the candid blurred shots that really capture a moment in time. And all you mamas out there- GET IN THE PICTURE!

  2. PUT THE CAMERA AWAY: we all love a good photo, or series of photos, but know when to put the camera away and become part of the moment. If you love photos as much as I do, this can be a huge challenge, but I promise, you'll be so happy you jumped in the pool with your kid and splashed around for a bit rather than just standing on the sidelines missing out on all the fun.

  3. GIVE YOUR SMARTPHONE A BREAK: we live in a world of technology which is both amazing and terrifying. I've noticed there is no easier way to guarantee missing out on life than constantly playing on my phone. It is literally impossible to read a book or play trains with Octavian when I am on my phone; so I put it away. Seriously, guys! Put it AWAY. Be all-in for your child (or husband, or siblings, or whoever), at least every once-in-a-while. You'll feel pretty warm and fuzzy after. promise!

  4. SURPRISE SOMEONE YOU KNOW WITH A SPECIAL TREAT OR A FUN ADVENTURE: my dear husband, who knows me so well, knows that I love chocolate flavor and sweets. The other day, after a long hard day, he surprised me with a McDonald's Shamrock Shake. The man knows I have a weakness for anything minty and chocolaty, so he really couldn't have done much better. Since this sweet little surprise, we have since returned to McDonald's for more minty shakes (because they're only available for a limited time!) and sometimes even bring Juniper along for the fun. These shakes also make for GREAT playdate treats (for the moms, not the kids. duh).

  5. SLOW DOWN: whether it's allowing Octavian to take his time on a nature trail (yes, even if that means we don't actually get anywhere) or decide that we're going to have a movie and PJ day (all day!), it's the slow moments that make everyday moments more special. Literally stop, smell the roses and, if you feel like it, cozy up on the couch with your person and drink a whole entire Mint Shake. Busy will be waiting for you tomorrow (along with a Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappe or Shamrock Mocha should you desire :)
