Let's Go Back-to-School with Natural Foods!

School is here! Carpools, crazy schedules, homework, sports, etc. etc. Life is about to get (crazy) busy again (because, you know, life with kids isn't busy enough as it is).

As a mom, feeding Octavian wholesome, healthy food is one of my top priorities. I've learned over the years that eating healthy does not need to mean lots of money or time and so, making smart and natural food choices is one of my rules (dessert does not count). This year we're going back-to-school with natural foods. With a little practice and creativity feeding O well balanced and nutritious lunches is actually super easy (and even a little fun!)

As a California resident I headed to my nearest Ralph's Store to stock up on their Simple Truth foods to fill his lunch box, along with the already much-loved and frequently purchased Horizon, Silk and So Delicious products.

(side note- have you tried the So Delicious Cashew Milk Ice Cream? Do it. Best stuff EVER.)

To hopefully make the transition back-to-school a little easier for you, I wanted to post a few lunchbox ideas to get you started.

You guys! This was so fun! I mean, who knew packing lunch could actually get me excited for the morning? My favorite part is that natural lunches for the kiddos doesn't have to mean boring. As with all meals, I always include one or two new foods or food combinations which challenges Octavian to try new foods, and, of course, an equal amount of food that I know he'll enjoy. I may even pack two of the same lunches each day- one for my husband and one for Octavian :)

Back-to-School with Silk

This is the lunch I always wanted and never got when I went to school (sorry, Mom); and this is a lunch I would happily sit down and eat today. Everything your kiddo needs is in this lunch- veggie, fruit, protein, grain, and fat. You can really make this lunch amazing by adding a cookie or two, but I ate them while packing the lunch, so no cookies for my kiddo (or husband). oops.

Soy Meaty with Silk:

Silk Singles in Very Vanilla
2 Tablespoons almonds
1/2 cup baby carrots
For the fruit parfait-
Silk Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative, Vanilla (comes in lots of flavors)
1/4 cup granola
1 cup chopped fresh fruit (frozen fruit would work also)
For the Meat Skewers-
Cheese, cut into cubes
Turkey, sliced
Salami, sliced
Cherry tomatoes
Small bamboo sticks

Back-to-School with Horizon Organic

Thanks to Horizon Organic (and some delicious mozzarella cheese balls) you can give your kids a healthy, balanced, protein-packed lunch that is completely vegetarian. Although Octavian LOVES his meat, he can survive (happily) without it for a few meals and won't miss a thing. If you are a vegetarian family or just celebrate meatless Monday, this lunch should make all the kiddos in your family happy campers.

Very Vegetarian with Horizon Organic:

Horizon Organic Milk Boxes, Vanilla
1 cup plain pasta noodles, cooked
Horizon Organic Fruit Snacks
1- 1 1/2 cups fresh fruit
For the Caprese Salad Skewers:
Whole milk mozzarella balls
Fresh basil
Cherry tomatoes
Small bamboo skewers
Horizon Organic Snack Crackers
Horizon Organic Sandwich Crackers

Back-to-School with So Delicious

I count my lucky stars that Octavian doesn't have any allergies; however, for many families out there that isn't the case and lunch time can feel like even more work. This may be especially true when faced with dairy allergies. No milk? No cheese? What's a Mom to do? So Delicious is here to help. With both milk and yogurt dairy alternatives (in addition to that totally amazing Cashew Milk Ice Cream I mentioned above), lunchtime is a breezeeee.

Dairy Free with So Delicious

So Delicious Single-Serve Coconut Milk Beverage, Chocolate
1/2 cup hummus
Mixed veggies and crackers
1 1/2 cups watermelon (or other fruit), cubed
So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Yogurt Alternative, Strawberry-Banana
For the "red ants on a log"-
2-3 celery sticks
2 Tablespoons peanut butter
Dried cranberries

I've been shopping at Ralph's stores since I was a little girl (do you remember when they used to have coupon dispensers along the aisles?) and I'm so excited to see their support for Organic and Natural foods all throughout their store. Easy to identify thanks to clean and simple packaging (look for the green!), Simple Truth products make stuffing my refrigerator with the good stuff easy and affordable (which is a huge deal for my family as the budget is tight).

Tell me, do you have any go-to healthy lunchbox foods or snacks? Does your family have any favorite Silk, Horizon Organic or So Delicious products that you can't live without?
