I love Thanksgiving. It's always been one of my favorite holidays. I love the gathering of family and friends and any excuse to eat 3 plates of food in one sitting without a second thought. Oh, and then the dessert... but, I digress.
Thanksgiving is a time for thanks, a time for family and, if you're part of my family, a time for food. Which is why, whenever Thanksgiving time rolls around, I spend so much time thinking about the big meal that I often forget people need to eat in the days and hours following the big feast.
Now that I have an active toddler running around and getting into the refrigerator (seriously, he can open the refrigerator!) I need food around all the time.
Keeping the refrigerator stocked with Octavian's favorite meals and snacks is easy. However, when family and friends come to stay for the holidays, it usually requires a little more planning. After all, with more people, come certain dietary preferences and larger appetites. My goal is always to prepare delicious food with as little work as possible. It's the holidays, after all. I would much rather spend time with visiting company than spend the entire time in the kitchen.
So I started thinking about breakfast. Breakfast is one of those meals people either love or hate. Thanks to a little help from Pillsbury™ Grand! Biscuits and a some inspiration from one of my all-time favorite breakfast foods, I thought why not make a bagel Monkey Bread? Premade Pillsbury biscuits allow me to enjoy more time with my family and feed them delicious food all at the same time.
I headed to my local Safeway store and picked up all the essential ingredients to make my bagel monkey bread dreams come true.
When I think about bagels, I think of cinnamon and raisins, sesame seeds, garlic, onion and asiago cheese. I rolled all this amazing bagel goodness around Pillsbury biscuits and Bagel Shop Monkey Bread was born.
The result was even better than I expected; and I had very high expectations for this crowd pleasing holiday breakfast.
This is the perfect Thanksgiving morning breakfast. It's easy to put together, looks beautiful and tastes amazing! Those who want breakfast (me!) can take a piece to-go, or even smear on some cream cheese and top with salmon for the ultimate bagel monkey bread breakfast. It can also be served as the bread dish for any other holiday breakfast or brunch.
And the kiddos? They'll gobble them right up!
To save time, you can even prepare your money bread the night before and bake the next morning, just be sure to cover tightly with plastic wrap.
All-the-Bagels Monkey Bread
Prep Time: 20 minutes / Cook Time: 25-35 minutes / Total Time: 45-55 minutes
Servings: Approximately 16
2 canisters Pillsbury™ Grands! Biscuits (large size, for a total of 16 biscuits), cut in half or in thirds (or a mix of both) and rolled into balls
1/2 cup butter (1 stick), melted
4 cloves fresh garlic, minced
For the Toppings:
I tried to think of as many bagel options as possible, with the hope that there would be a flavor everyone would enjoy. You can go wild and crazy with lots of toppings, or keep it limited to two or three; that's what's so great about this monkey bread. However, to get your bread to stick together for that "classic" monkey bread look, at least one flavor option should be cheese.
- Everything: minced dried onion, minced dried garlic, caraway seed, sesame seed, poppy seed
- Sesame Seed: white or black sesame seeds
- Poppy Seed: poppy seeds
- Cheddar Cheese with Fresh Chives: aged cheddar cheese (shredded), chives (chopped)
- Asiago Cheese: asiago cheese, shredded
- Cinnamon Raisin: raisins (chopped), dried cranberries (chopped), white granulated sugar, ground cinnamon
- Pumpkin Seed: pumpkin seeds (roughly chopped), pumpkin pie spice
- Heat your oven to 350 degrees F and grease your bundt pan with butter or cooking spray of choice (I did not want this beautiful breakfast to stick to the pan, so I really layered it on).
- First, prepare your toppings in separate shallow bowls or small plates.
- Everything: 2 Tbsp minced onion, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 tsp caraway seed, 1 tsp sesame seed and 1 tsp poppy seed. Mix.
- Sesame seed (3 Tbsp), Poppy seed(3 Tbsp) and Asiago Cheese (1/2 cup): Place each into separate bowls.
- Cheddar cheese with fresh chives: 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese with 2 Tbsp chopped chives. Mix.
- Cinnamon Raisin: Chop your raisins and cranberries and toss with 1 Tbsp of sugar and 1 tsp. ground cinnamon.
- Pumpkin Seed: Chop 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds and mix with 1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice.
- Pop open your tubes of Pillsbury™ Grands! Biscuits and cut each individual biscuit in half or in thirds. I couldn't decide which size I wanted, so I did a mix of each. Using the palm of your hand, roll each of them into a ball.
- Divide your melted butter into two separate bowls. In one bowl place half your belted butter with the minced garlic and stir. The other bowl will just have plain butter.
- Start dunking and rolling! If you have kids, they will love this part. One at a time, dunk each ball of dough into melted butter and then roll into desired topping. note: the garlic butter is best with savory toppings and the plain butter is best with sweet toppings. Arrange each biscuit in the pan so toppings are alternated. Continue this pattern until all biscuit balls have been coated and arranged.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees F or until biscuits are fully cooked and golden brown on top. When finished baking, removed from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before removing.
